JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with this colour.
The new file keeps the same width and height. Converting also leaves out camera and location metadata.

Which conversion do you need?
| Conversion | When it helps | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| PNG to JPG | Photos and screenshots saved as PNG are often far larger than needed. JPEG is accepted almost everywhere. | Transparency becomes a solid colour. Sharp text and line art can show faint blur around the edges. |
| WebP to JPG or PNG | Some older apps, printers and upload forms do not accept WebP images saved from websites. | The file may get larger. Use JPEG for photos and PNG for graphics with transparency. |
| JPG to WebP | Smaller images for your own website or blog, with similar visual quality. | Check that the place you are uploading to accepts WebP. |
| JPG to PNG | When an editor or form requires PNG, or you plan several more edits. | The file usually becomes much larger, and it does not restore detail JPEG already removed. |
Choosing a quality setting
For JPEG and WebP, quality controls how much detail the encoder may discard to save space. Around 85–92 is a good default for photos: hard to tell apart from the original but much smaller. Go down to 70–80 for web images where file size matters most. Values above 95 make files much larger for very little visible gain. PNG has no quality setting because it is lossless. The preview and the size difference appear before you download, so it is quick to try two settings and keep the better one.
Supported formats
The converter reads and writes JPEG, PNG and WebP. It does not open HEIC photos from iPhones, GIF animations, SVG graphics, RAW camera files or PDFs. On an iPhone you can usually choose “Most Compatible” in the camera format settings, or share the photo, which often converts it to JPEG automatically. Older versions of Safari cannot save WebP; if that happens you will see a message, and JPEG or PNG will still work. See the JPG vs PNG vs WebP guide for more detail.
Conversion questions
Does converting change the image dimensions?
No. The width and height stay the same. To change the size as well, use the image resizer, which also lets you choose the format.
Why did my file get bigger?
Converting a compressed photo to PNG, or saving a very small JPEG at high quality, can increase the size. The new file cannot be better than the source, so pick the format that suits the image rather than converting back and forth.
Is converting to JPEG safe for screenshots of text?
Usually, at quality 90 or above. If letters look fuzzy, PNG or WebP will keep text crisper.
