A compact preset for standard video thumbnails
This tool uses a 1280 × 720, 16:9 canvas and stays below 2,000,000 bytes. It is a convenient compact option, especially for mobile uploads. It is not YouTube’s only accepted size.
As checked on October 3, 2026, YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 for standard video thumbnails. Its published limits are 2 MB for video thumbnails uploaded on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. Check YouTube’s current thumbnail guidance before publishing. Thumbnail eligibility and content rules also apply.
This landscape tool is intended for standard videos. Shorts and podcast artwork have different shape recommendations. ImageFitNow is independent and is not affiliated with YouTube or Google.
How to prepare your thumbnail
Choose existing artwork
Start with your best original JPEG, PNG or WebP. Avoid repeatedly compressing the same copy.
Choose crop or fit
Crop fills the frame. Adjust the sliders to keep the important details. Fit preserves the whole image with white padding.
Review and download
Check faces, logos and small text in the exported preview, then save the JPEG for upload.
Thumbnail questions
Will the image stretch?
No. Crop removes edges to fill a 16:9 frame; fit adds white space around the complete image. Both preserve the image’s proportions. Small originals can look softer when enlarged.
Can I add text, backgrounds or overlays?
Prepare your design in an editor first. This tool handles the final crop, dimensions and file size so you can use existing artwork quickly.
Does meeting the file limit guarantee YouTube will accept it?
No. Your channel must be eligible, the artwork must meet YouTube’s rules, and upload requirements can change. The tool checks the file’s dimensions and byte count, not your account or content eligibility.
