JPG files are usually larger than the original HEIC, because HEIC compresses photos about twice as efficiently. Need a smaller file? Resize it or set a KB limit →

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPEG at similar quality, which is why Apple uses it. The catch is compatibility: Windows needs extra add-ons to open HEIC, and many upload forms, printers, older apps and websites only accept JPG or PNG.
JPG or PNG?
| Format | Best for | File size |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Sharing, uploading, printing, email | Larger than the HEIC, often up to twice the size |
| PNG | Editing where every pixel must stay exact | Large, often 5–10 times the HEIC |
For photos, JPG at quality 80–90 looks the same as the original to most people; the default of 85 keeps files smaller without visible loss. If a form has a size limit, run the JPG through the image resizer, which can target a KB or MB limit. Choose PNG only when an app specifically requires it.
Why convert in the browser?
Many online converters upload your photos to their servers. Holiday pictures, ID photos and screenshots can contain private details, so ImageFitNow decodes each file on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the converted copies leave out GPS location and camera details. To check a JPEG for location data later, use the metadata remover.
Supported files and limits
The converter reads HEIC and HEIF still photos from iPhones, iPads and other cameras that use the format. Live Photos are converted as a still image, and photos that hold several images (such as bursts) give the first image. Up to 50 photos at a time, 60 MB each. Very large batches depend on your device’s memory, so convert big albums in smaller groups if your browser slows down. HEIC decoding uses the open-source heic2any library (MIT licence), served from this site, so no photo or request goes to a third party.
HEIC questions
Is this HEIC converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no limit on how often you use it and no watermark.
Why can’t Windows open my HEIC photos?
Windows needs the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store. See how to open HEIC files on Windows, or convert them here instead.
How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC?
Set Camera › Formats to Most Compatible. The iPhone HEIC settings guide explains each option, including automatic conversion when you copy photos to a PC.
Will converting reduce quality?
JPG is a lossy format, but at quality 85 the difference is very hard to see on photos. PNG is lossless. Neither can add detail the original did not have.
A photo failed to convert. What now?
Some files named .heic are another format inside, or are damaged. Try opening the photo on your phone and sharing it by email or AirDrop, which usually sends a JPEG. If a normal iPhone photo fails, please tell us which device took it.
