Crop or fit: which should you use?
Crop to fill scales the image until it covers the whole frame, then trims whatever spills over. Nothing is stretched, but you lose some of the edges. It is the usual choice for social posts, profile pictures and anything that should feel full-bleed. Use the horizontal and vertical sliders to choose what stays. For a group photo, keep everyone’s head inside the frame; for a product shot, centre the product.
Fit with padding keeps the whole picture and adds plain space around it to reach the new shape. Choose this when nothing can be lost, such as a document, a chart, a piece of artwork or a logo. White padding suits most layouts, black suits dark themes and video, and transparent padding (PNG or WebP only) lets the background of a page show through.
About the size presets
The presets cover shapes that are widely used for posts, stories, link previews, pins, headers and banners. Platforms change their recommended sizes from time to time, so check the current help page of the site you are uploading to if an exact size matters. Any preset can be changed; type a new width or height and the list switches to Custom. The aspect ratio guide explains what each shape is for.
Will cropping lower the quality?
Cropping only removes pixels, so the part you keep looks the same as before, apart from the normal re-save in your chosen format. Quality drops if the size you choose is larger than the part of the photo being kept, because the tool then has to enlarge it. A note appears under the preview when that happens. For the best result, start from the original photo rather than a copy that has already been shared or compressed.
Cropping questions
Can I crop to a custom ratio such as 5:7 or 2:1?
Yes. Choose Custom size, or simply type the width and height you need. For a 5:7 print at 1500 pixels wide, enter 1500 × 2100. Any whole-pixel size up to 8,192 pixels per side works.
Can I crop a freeform area by dragging?
This tool crops to an exact shape, which is what upload forms and social sites need. Choose the shape, then use the sliders to move the frame across the picture.
Is the crop permanent?
Only in the copy you download. The file on your device is never modified, so you can crop it again in a different shape.
Does cropping remove location data?
Yes. The tool draws a new image, so the download does not include the original’s camera details or GPS location. To remove metadata without changing anything else, use the metadata remover.
