Image file size guide
Upload forms often impose a maximum file size. A photo that looks small on screen can still contain millions of pixels and exceed that limit.
A maximum, not an exact padded size
ImageFitNow aims to produce a valid file at or below your limit. It does not add useless data to make the file exactly 500 KB. The final byte count is checked before download becomes available.
How the target search works
For JPEG and WebP, the tool tries a high quality export, then searches lower quality settings when necessary. It retains a candidate that actually fits. If no candidate fits, it reports the problem. When permitted, it reduces dimensions and tries again. Encoder results vary between browsers, so output sizes may differ on two devices.
JPEG, PNG or WebP?
- JPEG: widely accepted for photographs. It uses lossy compression and replaces transparency with white.
- PNG: useful for transparency and graphics. This version uses the browser PNG encoder without specialized PNG optimization. A re-export can be larger than the original.
- WebP: supports transparency and adjustable compression. Check that your destination accepts it.
When the target is too small
Detailed images need more data than simple ones. No tool can guarantee readable text or a sharp photo at every limit. Raise the limit, reduce dimensions, or choose another format. Always inspect the preview.
When not to reduce an image
Keep unmodified copies of important records, evidence, archival photos and professional print originals. Re-exporting can change color profiles and removes original camera metadata. Follow the receiving organization's requirements for identity and application photos.
